The Basque Country Tour takes you from Saint Jean de Luz along the Corniche Basque and then up into the foothills of the Pyrenees. After driving through Ciboure and Socoa, we head to Ainhoa, Espellette, and Saint Jean Pied-de-Port before returning to the Atlantic coast. On the way back we visit Bayonne and Biarritz .

Saint Jean de Luz: is a lovely little fishing port on the Basque coast just South of Biarritz. I’ll take you on a short walk through the center of town and point out some of the highlights. This is a good place to shop for regional specialties as well.

After this short walk we’ll take the minivan and drive through Ciboure to Socoa, before following the Corniche Basque, along the rugged Atlantic coast. Just before the Spanish border we head up into the foothills of the Pyrenees mountains. We’ll first drive through the lovely French Basque mountain town of Ainhoa.

After Ainhoa we head to Espellette: In this Basque town the houses have a special decoration – they’re covered with strands of red peppers!

From Espellette we’ll drive further up into the Pyrenees to visit Saint Jean Pied-de-Port. This is the last city in France, and an important stop for pilgrims along the route to Compostella.

Next we return to the Atlantic coast to visit the capital of the French Basque Country: Bayonne. We’ll drive through the old town center along the Nive river and past the Sainte-Marie Cathedral, then continue South towards Biarritz.

    Biarritz: rhymes with Glitz!

You’ll see many different types of architecture here, and I’ll even show you the former Palace of Napoleon’s Empress Eugenie.
