Doi Suthep Temple
Stop at Doi Suthep first to see one of the most important temples in Thailand. Built on the side of a mountain not far outside of Chiang Mai, Doi Suthep Temple is one of the most spiritually significant sites in the country and has become a symbol of Chiang Mai itself. A set of naga-guarded tile steps leads to the top of the temple, which is well worth the trip. The temple is filled with gardens, statues, and shrines and crowned with an impressive gold stupa that glistens in the daylight.
Continue from here to Doi Inthanon National Park, a treasure trove of nature and culture. The first stop is Wachirathan Waterfall, which drops 80 meters down tiers of cracked stone and green shrubs. Stand on the shores of the pool of water at the bottom to admire the power and beauty of the falling water, erupting into mist and rainbows.
Continue your trek through the thick forest of the national park, stopping at a farm owned by a local hill tribe. The Pa Ka Yor villagers grow Arabica coffee here as part of a Royal Project focused on social development. Try a delicious cup of fresh-made coffee for an extra energy boost before trekking onwards to a second waterfall, tucked away even deeper in the jungle.
Stop for lunch at a local restaurant and a well-earned rest before continuing on the Angka Nature Trail. This short and shady trek passes by a stupa commemorating King Inthawichayanon, the forest-loving Thai king for whom the mountain is named. End the hike at the summit of the mountain, the highest point in Thailand at 2,656 meters!
Stop at the Royal Twin Pagodas next, one of the highlights of Doi Inthanon. These two Buddhist structures were built to honor the King and Queen of Thailand. Stroll through the gardens around their bases and gaze out into the picturesque valley below, stretching endlessly out into the horizonFinish the day at a Hmong hilltribe market, another royal project focused on community development. These projects preserve the environment while helping hill tribes live a better life. After the market, head back to the van to relax in the air conditioning on the drive back to Chiang Mai.
