    Itinerary

    Day 1Arrive Kolkata

    Arrive in Kolkata. We will receive you at the airport and drive you to your accommodation for overnight stay.

    Day 2Day tour of Kolkata

    You can spend the day at leisure with the Bengali family and recover from jetlag. Else, we can do a day long guided city tour of the historic Bengali temples, traditional cuisine, British colonial town, and the artisans’ colony of Kolkata.

    Day 3Arrive Guwahati

    Fly from Kolkata to Guwahati by morning flight. We will provide pickup from airport and drive to northern Assam, the region of Bodo tribe. Rest of the day available at leisure.

    Day 4The Bodo Culinary Experience

    Spend the day with the indigenous Bodo people of Assam. This is a food focused day with short village and artisanal excursions. Highlights of the day are –

    • Hands-on cooking experience with the Bodo people in traditional way.
    • Local dance and music session.
    • Village walking tour with visit to local families and a peek into their daily lives.
    • Traditional Bodo hand weaved textiles.

    Day 5Drive to Kaziranga National Park

    Depart after breakfast for Kaziranga National Park. Arrive by evening with rest of the day at leisure.

    Day 6Wildlife safari at Kaziranga National Park

    Morning safari on elephant back through the wilderness where you will see Indian Rhinoceros, deer, river dolphins, migratory birds, gray pelicans and more. Evening guided jeep safari in either eastern, or western or central range of Kaziranga national park.

    Day 8Arrive Shillong

    Drive from Kaziranga national park to Shillong and check-in to your hotel. Rest of the day available at leisure.

    Day 8Day tour of Shillong

    Drive off to the countryside to visit Laitlum canyon. It is about 15 km away from Shillong city. Rasong village lies at the bottom of this canyon, and the only way to reach it is to climb down 3000 steps which the locals do almost daily. Relax at this place for a while near the tea stall and possibly have a chat with the lady who runs it.

    We return to Shillong city and visit the museum of tribal artifacts. The museum has preserved the tools, musical instruments, clothes and other artifacts of all the tribes of North East India.

    Day 9Day tour of Shillong

    Visit the local fruit and vegetable market in morning. It is quite a sight as you may see tribes selling oranges, vegetables, meat, flowers, fragrant pine wood, perfumes, lentils and fresh fruits.

    Proceed to have a traditional Khasi tribal cuisine which gives you a glimpse of how the vegetables and spices you saw in the market are used in the local food.

    Leisure time to explore the main market of Shillong on your own. The taxi will drop you back to hotel after that.

    Day 10Meadows of Mawphlang

    Head to Mawphlang, the region known for its sprawling rice and potato fields and sacred forests. Go for a guided tour of the sacred forests of the Khasi tribe. Rest of the day is available at leisure to explore the surroundings on your own.

    Day 11David Scott’s trail walking tour

    Full day hiking on David Scott’s trail. This 16 km long easy hike takes you through beautiful suspension bridges over rivers, deep forested landscapes and few villages, cascading waterfalls, scenic valleys, and meadows.

    Day 12Waterfalls and caves with fossils

    Drive to Cherrapunjee and further to the Nohkalikai falls. We also take a tour of one of the many fossil caves.

    Day 12Living root bridges and Indo-Bangladesh border

    We drive to Riwai Living root bridge and Mawlynnong (the cleanest village in Asia). After that we arrive at the busy Indo-Bangladesh border by noon to see the beautiful Umngot river. On a clear day you can see the river bed clearly.

    Day 13Hiking to remote Khasi villages

    Drive from Mawphlang further south where we start our walking trip to the beautiful Nongriat village. This village was once approachable only by a jungle trail. While you hike to Nongriat, you will cross few living root bridges and iron suspension bridges. The area itself is rich in biodiversity and butterflies. Rest of the day at leisure.

    Day 14Walking tour to the hidden waterfalls

    Today we hike further to the beautiful forest, more living root bridges, and waterfalls. We hike back to Nongriat on the same day.

    Days 15 &16Indigenous people of Meghalaya

    Spend the next two days with the indigenous animist people of Meghalaya that keeps their ancestral folktales alive. Spend the evening taking a village walk and learning about Khasi fighter clans that migrated over centuries and mingled with other clans. 

    Spend the next day on a walking tour in the forest where you see traditional ways of bee keeping and honey harvesting. Spend time participating in the daily chores with the locals such as farming, community gatherings, and helping make a living root bridge.

    Day 17 & 18 The weaving community

    Spend the next two days with the weaving community. Arrive at the village on the first day with rest of the time at leisure to rest or explore the neighborhood on your own.

    The next day entails visiting weavers in their homes and looking at the traditional ways of synthesizing the strand, dyeing, setting up a loom, and weaving the traditional patterns. End the tour with a traditional Khasi meal cooked over wood fire with raw material sourced completely from the forest.

    Day 19Departure

    Depart for Shillong or Guwahati airport after breakfast.
